Leisure Activities

There are plenty of leisure activities in Ellon and the surrounding areas of Aberdeenshire and Buchan. The town of Ellon has grown considerably in recent years and now has approximately 9000 inhabitants.

Positioned within the unrivalled setting of the banks of the River Ythan, and nestled within wooded parklands the town has kept many of its distinctive features and you will see the wealth of local history and wildlife habitats that this small town can offer.

Fishing

The Ythan is renowned for its salmon fishing and for several centuries it was also known as a rich source of pearl mussels. These creatures, now protected by law, can produce some truly beautiful pearls, which in the Ythan's case really were fit for a king.

A pearl found at the mouth of one of its tributaries was of such high quality that it was presented to King James VI and now forms one of the brightest jewels in the Scottish Crown. With its richness in wildlife the River Ythan is a jewel in the North East area.

Enjoy a spot of fishing on the Ythan Fisheries Loch or a few miles west of Ellon at Lochter Fishery and Haddo Trout Fishery.

Station Hotel, River Ythan Newburgh Estuary

Situated on the beautiful sandy estuary of the River Ythan, midway between Aberdeen and Peterhead, Newburgh is a thriving picturesque, coastal village with roots going back 800 years.

It is on the estuary that the fishing is concentrated, with anything up to around 2000 sea trout, and a small number of salmon, are taken each year.

The area is dominated by fine sand dunes including the Sands of Forvie, which have been designated as a Special Area of Conservation. It is claimed that Forvie has the largest population of eider ducks in the world and in fact the entire area teems with birdlife and wildlife.

McDonald Golf Club

This scenic eighteen hole golf course provides a memorable golfing experience for all standards of golfer. The parkland course is named after its benefactor Sir James McDonald who, in 1926, gifted the old woodlands to the people of Ellon.

The original nine hole course wends its way through this magnificent forest with its stately trees and beautiful rhododendron bushes.

The well established first nine has been carefully constructed to maintain the parkland character. It has a natural stream that twists and turns across the course and features on almost every hole.

Ellon now has its own circular walk enabling visitors and residents to appreciate the town's unrivalled setting by the banks of the Ythan. The river contains a wealth of wildlife, some easier to spot than others.

You may well see the grey heron, in shallow water by the river's edge, waiting for a fish or other small creature to come within grabbing range. But the river is also home to swans, salmon, trout, and even the elusive otter.

The waymarked walk "a'boot Ellon" takes in the riverside as well as the wooded parklands behind the heart of the town. About 26 miles away is the famous hill Bennachie, with an Information Centre, walks and fabulous views. The varied coastlines east and north of us offer cliff scenery, fascinating.
